Vajravarahi
Vajravarahi | Dorje Phagmo - རྡོ་རྗེ་ཕག་མོ - 金刚亥母
Vajravarahi is a female yidam deity, usually depicted in a dynamic dancing posture with a sow's head emerging from the crown of her head.
Vajravarahi is of particular importance for the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. She can only be distinguished from the dancing form of Vajrayogini by one characteristic. In her piled-up hair appears the head of a sow.
She is the Sambhogakaya form of Samantabhadri, meaning the ultimate, non-dual, primordial awareness—the direct realization of reality as it is, free from illusion and suffering.
The Tibetan translation of the Sanskrit name Vajravarahi is Dorje Pagmo. Here, 'pag' means pig. The pig is traditionally associated in Buddhism with the root poison of ignorance (mohaḥ), and Tibetan literature reads Vajravārāhī’s hog’s head as the sublimation of that passion.
Vajravārāhī is described as “terrifying with anger which is in fact displayed out of compassion (karuṇākrodha).”
By calling Vajravarahi we are praising her as the essence of the perfection of wisdom that destroys ignorance. The Eight-line Praise to Vajravarahi is a powerful tantric invocation that acknowledges her supreme wisdom (Prajñā), calls on her protection against fear, demons, and ignorance, and invokes her transformative power to clear obstacles and awaken clarity.
She is the 'Blessed Mother' because she has destroyed the four maras by eliminating all obstacles to liberation and possesses all the good qualities of a Buddha making her an embodiment of wisdom, compassion, and unstoppable spiritual power.
