Green Dzambhala - The Deity whose Vow is to Protect

ཛམ་བྷ་ལ། | 绿财神 | Green Jambhala

Mantra: Om Dzambhala Dzalim Dzaye Svaha

Green Dzambhala is a significant figure in spiritual traditions, defined both by his divine origin and a powerful sacred vow. Recognized as an incarnation of Buddha Aksobhya, Green Dzambhala is closely linked to this blue-colored Buddha who presides over the eastern paradise. Consequently, Green Dzambhala is considered a form of Buddha Akshobyah.

The purpose of his presence, known as his beneficence, is comprehensive and focused on worldly and spiritual success. Green Dzambhala works to enable all beings to succeed in everything they undertake. He assists in the fulfillment of all wishes, aids in the accumulation of wealth, and is crucial for the elimination of ill omen and other hindrances that obstruct a practitioner’s path.

Protecting Shakyamuni and Making a Vow

While his origin is divine, the core of the Green Dzambhala legend lies in a powerful and sacred vow he made, establishing his active role in the world. This solemn promise was made directly in the presence of Buddha Sakyamuni. Green Dzambhala vowed that he would extend his protection and assistance to anyone who chanted his Mantra or chanted his name. This commitment, witnessed by the historical Buddha, grants Green Dzambhala his ongoing legendary status as a powerful benefactor and protector of practitioners.

The beneficence Green Dzambhala offers serves as the practical fulfillment of his sacred vow. His commitment is broad and comprehensive, focused on ensuring that all beings are able to succeed in everything they undertake. Beyond general success, he assists practitioners in specific areas, including the fulfillment of all wishes, the accumulation of wealth, and, crucially, the elimination of ill omen and other hindrances that might obstruct a practitioner’s spiritual or material path. While other forms, such as the White Dzambhala, have specific focuses (like curing diseases, promoting charitable deeds, getting rid of poverty and sins, and accumulating wealth), Green Dzambhala’s mandate emphasizes broad success and obstacle removal.

Though he is often mistaken for the Yellow Dzambhala—"if you see closely, the both of them look alike"—Green Dzambhala’s spirit is uniquely his own. When one has difficulties, the teachings say, it is best to chant sincerely in one’s heart. For even a whisper of his name is met by his vow, and by the boundless blessings of his enlightened form.
