Mantra: Om Padma Trotha Arya Dzambhala Siddhaya Hum Phat
The White Dzambhala, known in Tibetan as "Dzambhala Gapee," stands as a profoundly significant Wealth Deity within Buddhist tradition. He is not merely a figure of material fortune but is revered primarily as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva who embodies universal compassion and who listens to the sounds of the world. A truly unique facet of his identity is the belief that White Dzambhala was born from the right eye of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, solidifying his role as a compassionate provider. He is formally addressed as the Lord of riches, Arya Dzam-bha-la, who meets all the needs of transient beings with compassion.
The practice associated with White Dzambhala is undertaken to alleviate suffering and promote profound well-being. The beneficence of White Dzambhala is said to cure diseases, get rid of poverty and sins, promote charitable deeds and accumulate wealth. He is the Lord of the wealth of longevity, merit, food and riches. Furthermore, chanting his mantra can stop suffering, destroy bad karma, and avert disaster and sickness.
Born out of the Right Eye of Avalokitesevara
The White Dzambhala is revered as a powerful Wealth Deity and his legend is rooted deeply in the compassionate core of Mahayana Buddhism, as he is understood to be a direct manifestation of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Avalokitesvara is the celestial being who embodies the compassion that listens to the sounds of the world. The most intriguing aspect of the White Dzambhala's origin is his unique birth story: he is explicitly said to be born from the right eye of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. This establishes him not just as a random spirit of fortune, but as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, dedicated entirely to compassionate action on the material and spiritual planes. He is invoked as the Lord of riches, Arya Dzam-bha-la, who dwells in the supreme abode of Chang-lo-chen.
His legend states that his principal function is to alleviate the poverty and suffering of transient beings. He is considered the Lord of the wealth of longevity, merit, food and riches. According to the sutra, his divine intervention is comprehensive: he is said to be able to stop suffering and to dispel bad Karma, and his blessings aim to cure diseases, get rid of poverty and sins, promote charitable deeds and accumulate wealth.
The visualization of his legendary form reinforces his protective yet benevolent nature. Although he appears Clear white, he is often described as wrathful in appearance, with his hair flowing upward like flames. His identity is intrinsically linked to his implements, particularly the jewel producing mongoose (or a mongoose that spits out precious gems) held in his left hand, which symbolizes his continuous generosity toward the poor and needy. Adding to his mystique are his multiple mounts: he is sometimes seen sitting on a snow lion, or alternatively, he sits on a turquoise dragon or rides on the back of a green dragon, sporting amongst the clouds.
